seems like mycosis, so I would lower the humidity for sure. S. dehaani is a tropical species, so Id assume that for it To develop mycosis it would have to be sopping wet in the enclosure , but then again Ive never dealt with mycosis before
Given that this is your first buthid, I would probably start with some kind of Hottentotta. Most species from that genus would be fine given you take the obvious precautions, but if you want to be extra safe maybe avoid the hotter species such as H. tamulus
Thats a normal resting position for millipedes, so theres not any reason to be concerned , just try not to disturb it too much (I dont blame you though, I was just as eager to watch my first millipede when I got it) as to cause as little stress as possible 👍
When I kept millipedes I kept native species in a warmer room of the house, so I dont have experience using heat mats for them, but from what ive read I would say to keep it on the side of the enclosure, for the same reason you mentioned
7cm is not deep enough for anything but the smallest millipedes, an AGB like yours would need from 22-26cm of soil as an adult, but since from the image yours seems to be a juvenile still, I think 16-20cm would probably suffice. Getting more flake soil would be ideal, since millipedes eat their...
there doesn't really seem to be anything that initially pops out as obviously wrong, but then again Im not the most experienced w/ millipedes. Your soil mix seems good, and the only enclosure advice I have besides what I said already would be to maybe add one or two larger cork bark pieces for...
Anything Brachypelma, Aphonopelma, Tliltocatl, etc. is always a great place to start. The vast majority of NW terrestrials would be suitable, although there definitely are some that will be too feisty for a total beginner (P. sazimai, Theraphosa sp., and others)
Where are you keeping the enclosure? If you're keeping it in a well-lit area it will be stressed, millipedes, like most arthropods, prefer darker spaces. Also, if youre taking it out from somewhere dark into light to observe it that would explain it freaking out. You said you got it today, so id...
I'm late, but if you haven't gotten your answer already maybe try researching the active ingredients and seeing if they would have any effect on the species you keep?
I would def recommend to add more substrate, with terrestrial species like this it should be almost near the top of the enclosure. If you're able to, it might be worth investing in an enclosure that would be better suited for such a setup
It seems like theres been a lot more of a crackdown on exotic pet ownership lately. Does anyone else find it kinda ridiculous how relatively harmless pets such as scorpions and tarantulas are lumped in with stuff that only belong in zoos?
My county just decided to ban ownership of a wide...
My first tarantula, a curly hair which I thought to be female, molted into a mature male today. It's a bit of a bittersweet moment, because from what I've heard he's got about 1-3 years left to live. Right now I am unsure whether I should attempt to pair him with another mature female to fulfill...
Instead of looking for the absolute cheapest centipede you can find, focus on finding a healthy animal within your price range. Sure you can go out and buy a wild caught subspinipes for dirt cheap, but it probably won’t last very long. There’s plenty of good sellers in the classifieds section...
