Comment by 'MikeofBorg' in media 'Avicularia avicularia'

I was thinking female, but man my close vision has really left me at 47. Thank you for the help. 👍🏼 I’m glad she is a lady. Lost my last Avic to DKS and it was female. A June bug flew into her enclosure and she ate it. I’m sure it had gotten some type of insecticide on it. It was my mistake. I...

    Avicularia avicularia

Molt of my Pink Toe. It’s a very shy spider. Have not been able to film its ventral side on the glass. My close vision is horrible so I can’t tell the sex.

    Communal Question

He asked about scientific papers on the behavior. I believe that’s all he asked about. I’m still trying to get the Ohio State Library webpage to work at the moment. Really want access to all the journals so I can link more papers. I just spent last week going through them, but didn’t save the...

    Good news :)

I had a mealworm chew it’s way out of a green anoles stomach one time. Obviously the lizard died, but the worm lived. I’ve never fed them to my anoles again. Straight supplement dusted crickets for them forever.

    Communal Question

Grammostola pulchra. I’ve yet to have one in my collection, but I have seen folks say they are the Black Labs of the T world.

    Communal Question

https://ag.purdue.edu/entm/ENTM%20493%20Capstone%20Summaries/Nicolas%20Cazzaniga.pdf This one is from Perdue University. For those that asked for a paper. The Ohio State Library page has been acting up all day. As soon as I can search the journals again I’ll link more. And to answer the...

    Communal Question

I’ve seen a few; Dark Den and Tom Moran have communal setups that have had slings a few times. Seen a few others that I can’t remember the name. So yes there are successful communal enclosures. Some even find that breeding M. balfouri communally to be more successful. Females of M. balfouri...

What Qualities give a tarantula the title bird eater

I raise and release Bobwhite Quail in Ohio as another hobby. My big female A. geniculata could easily take down a few day old quail chick. I wouldn't do that though, crickets and roaches along with a occasional horn worm is her table fare.

    Communal Question

I would agree with you if they didn't live that way in the wild. M. balfouri tend to live communally due to being on a small island. I've seen a number of videos of folks visiting the island and finding numerous communities of M. balfouri living together in huge tunnel networks with 30 plus Ts...

    Communal Question

I’m not sure which species I want to try. I’m torn between M. balfouri or H. gigas. I am leaning more toward M. balfouri. My question is I have a 33 gallon long aquarium. It’s 36 inches long, 21 inches high and 18 inches wide. Would this be large enough or too small for a community of 5 Ts...

Is this Brachypelma Emilia and is she in heavy premolt?

    Nice looking spider, just stunning.

    Good news :)

One of my favorite arboreal Ts! I always have a Pink Toe species in my collection. Just love them. Mine have always be rather curious for a spider, they always come check me out when I do maintenance. They really don't like walking on human skin though; if they jump on my hand in the...

Is this Brachypelma Emilia and is she in heavy premolt?

Yeah, she about to split that skin, leave her be. I really want to add a B. emilia to my collection someday. Just a wonderful looking species. Keep us posted as she gets her color.

    Venom

I passed a kidney stone last week, and I'll take the pain of venom over that any day. I was stung by a Tarantula Hawk Wasp in Arizona in 2000. That pain was nothing to the stone. At the time I thought it was the worst I ever felt; until last Friday. Bad thing is it took 4 days for the stone...

Is my Poecilitheria sling just going to stay camped out right by the lid?

I believe my Zilla is 18"Hx12"Lx12"W.. It was the $89 one at Petco. I'm too lazy to get up and grab my tape measure at the moment, just had Chinese and it's sticking to my ribs.

Is my Poecilitheria sling just going to stay camped out right by the lid?

The pokies love their height over length. Had my P. rufilata in an arboreal enclosure from Zilla. He had live plants to web up. He usually hung out about midway up behind some cork bark. Once he matured he was a wanderer. He is currently out on breeding loan. Hopefully he makes some babies for us.

    A good second old world??

Don’t get an H. longipes. Great looking spider, but a total pet hole. Only ever see it’s toes when it’s hungry. Did get one nice photo when she was just added to the enclosure; before her digging spree.

    Newest addition a GBB

My Chromatopelma cyaneopubescens arrived today. It came well packaged from a friend. It’s suspected female; I’ll know next molt 100%. I really can’t wait to see what it does with all the webbing anchor points I gave it. I do need a better water dish. The plastic one is too light. It’s already...

Freebies. Like em or hate em tell me why! Do you think they're good practice?

Love them. Freebies get spiders out the door and into keepers hands. Spiderlings that might otherwise not sell quickly. Most the freebies are Ts that produce a lot of young. My A. geniculata was a freebie, and I got lucky it was female. It also saves the breeders money by not having to feed a...

    ITCHES!!!!!

I always wear my beekeeper gloves when cleaning my guys with urticating hairs. They go all the way to my elbows. I have honeybee colonies also. They are rather inexpensive for the unventilated sheepskin ones. Like $25 a pair. They last forever too. You can get the whole suit with gloves for $30...
