A story about a rescue and a release

about two months ago I rescued a small mole cricket who had been dragged around my kitchen for about two hours by a blue ant (blue wasp). The cricket was paralysed and I took pity on it, so I decided to make a small, damp container with soil and feed it worm juice. The cricket recovered so I...

    giany horse fly

Maybe I should start using them for orb weavers and maybe carnivorous katydids if I get some. Sounds like they make good feeders

    giany horse fly

Really? They're always on my fruit trees in summer waiting for flying insects to go past and they've never attacked me, they always fly away. Maybe they're more skittish due to the amount of predators in the area

    giany horse fly

Robber flies hunt other insects, why do you need to watch out for them?

    I hate crickets!

I went to a new pet store that's just down the road, just to see if they're any good (this is the kind of pet store that sells only supplies for pets and fish). Picked up a box of crickets and half of them are dead, they really aren't good feeders

    Centipede escaped. Help!

Centipedes are rather intelligent for an invertebrate. With that lid it wasn't a matter of if it escaped, but when

How do I make "Cricket Soup" ?

I have at least 5 species of parasitic wasp in my garden. They're pretty interesting to watch, I've seen quite a few sparassids meet their premature deaths by the larger species

How do I make "Cricket Soup" ?

When they sting the T it's just paralysed, the wasp drags it into a hole before an egg is laid

Id take you up on that offer in a heartbeat but unfortunately I can't import anything because of fauna and flora restrictions :shifty:

Nephila egg sac - any advice gratefully received

I plan on collecting lots of orb weaver species. There's some real stunners in northern australia, apparently there's a red and white tent-weaver orb weaver which I'm obsessed with. I've also tried keeping leaf curling spiders but I had problems with them.

Nephila egg sac - any advice gratefully received

Yup. I actually probably lost a few in the flexarium (it was big, maybe 4 ft by 4 ft, nephila edulis builds huge webs), didn't lose a massive number though.

Nephila egg sac - any advice gratefully received

I've hatched a few Nephila egg sacs before, but those were Nephila edulis and they're a much lower humidity species. I just left the female to tend to the eggs and they did fine at room temp

How do I make "Cricket Soup" ?

I used mealworm soup for baby katydids a while back. Crush the feeder as much as possible and add a few drops of pineapple juice to help liquefy the feeder. Don't know if pineapple juice would be safe for a T though

Help!! Apartments are spraying for pests

That's just a bit petty and annoying, don't you think? First you go criticising cold blood, and now you're trying to insult him :shifty:

    Ethics of Keeping Live Arthropods

Keeping insects is fine. They're happy, and mature males can find mates without risking their lives wandering in the open if you bring a mate to them. I got into an argument with somebody who told me to release my snake because I'm denying it freedom despite having an enclosure larger than the...
