How many species of arachnids may there be?

Many papers have attempted to give estimations to the number of insect species. Some give as high as 20 to 30 million, though most are between 3 and 10 million. However, much less attention has been given to arachnids in this regard. One paper...

    Bioactive only springtails and isopods?

Not many people are aware of these. This or a closely related species lives in my yard, getting photos of them is really hard since they are tiny and always jumping around.

    Bioactive only springtails and isopods?

Would proturans be good as a springtail substitute?

    Bioactive only springtails and isopods?

There are many kinds of detritivorous animals in the soil, that break down plant material and engage in nutrient cycling. Yet when people speak of bioactive setups, they only speak of isopods and springtails. People never mention mites, despite mites being a major component of soil arthropod...

It seems Tactopoda (arthropoda + tardigrada) is the preferred system now, but this may change in the future.

No dipterans in the bug hobby?

You are carrying the diptera hobby all alone on your back. In the future people will look back upon you as a great founder.

Species you'd love to see in the hobby

I think mites get a bad rep, even among invert/arthropod people. There are many endearing mites that would make great pets. Holothyrids are large sized predatory mites. Opilioacarids are very primitive mites that retain large eyes and visible body segmentation. A lot of larger water mites...

No dipterans in the bug hobby?

I knew there was non biting mosquitoes, but I didn't know there was non biting horseflies! With bugs there is always more to learn it seems.

No dipterans in the bug hobby?

Try taking tabanid larvae. They are aquatic and predatory, maybe feeding the larvae would be easier. Honestly, I do think horseflies would be more popular pets if they didn't bite. Large predatory larvae growing into large nectivorous adults with vibrant colors. What's not to love?

No dipterans in the bug hobby?

I applaud your efforts here, giving a chance to the most despised bugs. Why don't tabanids do well in captivity?

No dipterans in the bug hobby?

I hate to be negative here, but aren't some of those species you mentioned earlier known disease vectors, especially ones in the genera Aedes, Culex and Anopheles? Were they released in the wild or all killed or what?

Was this all for some research project, or you just felt like if? Also, have you tried Sabethes?

Snow dwelling insects are great! Grylloblattodes and snow scorpionflies are similar in this regard.

No dipterans in the bug hobby?

Funny you mention drain flies. In another server, I proposed an idea about of keeping cellar spiders in an exhibit modeled after a little room with little furniture. Perhaps there could be a little bathroom themed terrarium with cellar spiders, drain flies, and silverfish. Drain flies lay their...

Zoos keep leafcutters already, maybe they can display those giant mydas flies as well.
