What's the cutest thing about tarantulas?

I don't know if it's just me, but I think the chelicerae look like a giant, fluffy mustache. Paired with the tiny eyes reflecting in the light, it looks as though the tarantula's "mustache" is too big for its "face."

    Your slowest grower?

My E. sp red is definitely the slowest. It was 1/4" in January. I think it may have molted once but it didn't appear to get much bigger. It is maybe 3/8" and that's being generous haha.

    Any New Additions?

What are the "Hobby Staples"? The T's you have to have?

I know dwarf species aren't for everyone, but I would say that H. sp. red (formally E. sp. red) is definitely a great species to own. What they lack in size, they make up for in personality. My little one (maybe 1/3") is quite active, even at that tiny size.

Coffee grounds for substrate? Does caffeine affect T's?

https://owlcation.com/stem/Caffeine-Its-effects-on-animals-plants-and-the-environment Please note the section about how spiders given caffeine could not form webs properly, and the following section which notes that insects preferentially AVOIDED substrate laced with caffeine. Smaller insects...

Coffee grounds for substrate? Does caffeine affect T's?

Even decaf coffee contains some caffeine. There will be caffeine in coffee grounds, even if they've been used. Caffeine and nicotine are very similar, and both are natural pesticides. I would not try this. It could kill your tarantula. Even if death was not immediate, low level exposure to even...

How much research did you do before getting your first T?

I did no research initially. My husband ordered two slings from net-bugs and I was adamant that I would not be the one caring for them. Needless to say, after watching our B vagans and H. sp red slings do their spidey things, I was sold. So, I ended up doing a lot of research and picked out...

    Share Your Atypical Tarantula Behavior

My B. emilia (juvie, possible female) is a savage beast lately. She leapt off her hide and caught a cricket basically upside down this weekend. She's one of my favorites, so its been *awesome* watching her hunt, especially after her month-long fast before molting...lol. My G. rosea kicked...

How Many Ts did you have in your first six months in the hobby?

Not quite to six months and we have 8... But my husband is the one who keeps buying them. ;) The first three we got were (are) slings. Then we got a few larger ones. So now we have one 4" T, three 2-3" Ts and 4 slings of varying sizes.

    Dying or Trying to Molt?

Hmm I don't recall rating your post!! I left my phone on the coffee table while perusing the forums and there was a big nose print on it (he always smells my stuff lol). My dog must have managed to pull that trick! Sorry about that.

    Who molted today?

My juvenile B. emilia is either almost done molting or is done molting. It's basically been in premolt since we got her so I'm very excited that this finally happened!

    Any New Additions?

Recently received my first larger, more "intermediate" species, a female ~3.5" A. seemani. ^_^ She seems to be taking to the burrow I started in the corner of her enclosure and has been working on making it to her liking.

    Euathlus Sp. Red appreciation thread

I have a 1/4" sling, and even at that size, it is always out and doing something in its little enclosure. If it's in its burrow when I go into the room, it often crawls out to see what's going on. It seems almost fearless, especially for something so small.

Poll: Have you ever received a tarantula as a gift?

My husband came home this weekend with a 2" B. emilia that is most likely female, apparently as a gift for our fifth anniversary. Oddly enough, he wanted to get the very same B. emilia when I picked up a 1.25" B. smithi a couple weeks ago. She is a great looking T and I love me some...
