    Today in the Spider Room?

Rehoused my juvie H. pulchripes, A. aurantiaca and B. hamorii, both a molt away from adulthood, and all three went easy peasy. I’m finally caught up on rehousing and it feels great! Well, until my versi and B. smithi harden up and get put in their forever homes . And baumgarteni and machala...

You know you’ve been hanging around your T’s too much when…

When you use “Cyriopagopus” as an insult. And mean it, too.

    What’s your species wishlist currently?

Ts I will get but haven’t gotten around to yet: D. pentaloris P. cambridgei S. sp. Santa Catalina Xenesthis (if ever the price goes down) M. robustum A. ezendami Ts I might give in to temptation for: I. mira H. devamatha T. rasti Some fancy Avics. Maybe. Shut up and take my money: E...

    A few good dwarfs?

Most dwarf species are pretty secretive. Their small size lends to higher predation and their behavior reflects that, with a lot of adults choosing to remain in burrows/web castles/dirt curtains etc…

Shaking your fist at the neighbors, P. irminia edition

About 7 years ago when my OBT was still a juvenile (psshhhh teenagers) she was so ornery she would literally threat pose when I walked in the room. I guess it was the air movement, but she would even give threat poses inside her hide. Just mean. I’ve never had a spider that defensive before or...

What is a species that you have no interest in keeping?

:rofl::rofl: E. pachypus is literally the only tarantula I would break my $50 rule for. I would empty my 401K to get my hands on a few slings, especially since they’re impossible to find these days. In my personal opinion they’re just cooler than cool with those pencil thick legs. P...

What is a species that you have no interest in keeping?

I’m kinda cheap so any sling that costs over $50, yeah, I’m out.

The OFFICIAL YouTube thread for tarantula care and husbandry channels

While I don’t doubt he cares very much for his animals, I distinctly recall one of his videos making me think “Tarantulas on coffee tables? Dude is really trying to get his money’s worth from that camera,”

What are some of the most valuable learning experiences you've had in the hobby?

    1. Tarantulas know more about and are better at being tarantulas than me. 2. Just because tarantulas and plants both exist in nature doesn’t mean I have to put them together in little plastic boxes in my house. It’s often better not to. 3. Most colors are just variations of brown when you...

The OFFICIAL YouTube thread for tarantula care and husbandry channels

Basically, AB is mean because the husbandry advice/general discussion are not guided solely by the profit motive. Clicks on this site aren’t views for him.

Things you love\hate about the tarantula hobby?

I hate cleaning out enclosures after they’ve been used. It’s like doing the dishes, but with poop and webbing. Just tedious and annoying. Feeding time, however, is the joy of joys. The cat and dog get locked out, I crack a beer and relax. Oh, and my wife doesn’t bother me either.

    Expectations vs. Reality

Bad expectation vs. reality: P. sazimai. I don’t want to cut mine up too bad because she is a good eater and I do really enjoy her but, yeah, they’re only blue for like 15 minutes after a molt. Very neat spider, but not quite as advertised. Good expectation vs. reality: ok, I’m going to cop out...

    Too small for a beginner?

I believe most vendors prescribe buying larger Ts for you first is because most “beginner” tarantulas start very small and take a number of years to get large and show adult coloration. Basically, you get what you already have in your head as a tarantula. Which is great. Slow growing slings can...

    Your calmest specimens

I have a P. rufilata that’s a total sweetheart. Eight years old and only ever bolted once when she was a sling. Since then, smooth sailing. Now, that does certainly not mean I go poking around her enclosure, but she’s a very big chill girl (except now I’ve done gone and jinxed it) Her speed is...

Rehousing large l Kugi help ?

White and yellow molds don’t really harm tarantulas (at least something like a klugi, we’re not talking an Avic here), at least not in my experience. While they may be unsightly and certainly worth removing, I wouldn’t do an entire rehouse over it. If the spider is well fed there’s a good chance...

    You sure are.

Weird Behavior - Is this webbing?

Yup that’s mold. Mostly forms on uneaten prey. Won’t hurt your spider but still unsightly. Just remove it with a pair of tongs and let the substrate dry out. If it’s not too wet in the enclosure it shouldn’t happen again

    Eventful rehousings?

I took a projectile poop from a SAM A. sp. Peru purple (juruensis now?) right in the kisser during a rehouse about 3 years ago. I couldn’t even say curse words for fear of it getting in my mouth.
