You're actually both touching on parts I am planning on looking at! At one point (at least locally to me) breeders have unintentionally interbred C. elegans with closely related Cyriocosmus species creating a hybrid, selling them as pure without realizing it. We have not looked at the genetic...
Good afternoon everyone!
I am currently working on my Masters in Organismal Biology and to complete my laboratory portion of my research, I need to import 30 tarantulas from Trinidad. I have already gotten the paperwork on the Trinidad side of things completed, but I don't know what to expect...
All pamph juveniles look essentially identical unfortunately. That is correct, only males get vibrant colors. Females will turn either a dark brown or a black with very slight purple hues in the right lighting. Female pamphs are still beautiful though!
One determining factor on wether it is a platyomma or a machala is the hairs on the abdomen. You will need a full picture to get a better guess as to which it is. Machala have red hairs and platyomma have black hairs. The body color on both can range anywhere from pinkish to purplish - depends...
Hello everyone! I am currently doing research with the University of Toledo and I am working with O. texicolens. Does anyone know what the exact chemical is that is excreted from Orthoporus texicolens as a defense mechanism? It is yellow in color and smells shockingly similar to a horse barn...
Hello everyone!
I recently moved my three orthoporus texicolens from their old tank into a new, larger one. You all know what that means!! Open tank for more critters!!!
Here are some specifications on the tank/enclosure:
It is a 2 gallon, upright standing hexagonal plastic tank with a solid...
What is the approximate legspan of yours? Mine just molted a few days ago but hasn't sported the pinkish orange on his thorax since he was around 3-4 inches. He is now a confirmed male at 6 inches.
Hello everyone!
I am currently planning a trip to Ecuador in early January, and I was wondering if we could work together to form a some what decently complete list of tarantula species that are found there! From my understanding, Avics and a few Pamphobetues species are there, however, I have...
Hello all!
When I was younger, I owned a few milipedes that I captured from my yard. Now, as I am directly working with milipedes for my research, I decided to get a few as pets again.
I just purchased them yesterday (got three) and tossed them into a temporay tank until I got home the next...
The day before I had to leave them, my Jamie's T tanks came in the mail. I used the substrate, hides and water bowls that were given with the tanks for my Ts but little did I know that the "nonporous water bowls" actually were porous and would empty completely after a day. The tanks also have...
* to clarify, the picture of her is after I moved her back into her travel container. She webbed the ground over from the last time she was in the tank so it looks old, but it is not the enclosure that was flooded
I removed her from the tank with mold. If you pick up a handful of the substrate and squeeze it, water pours out. I currently am running to the store to get new substrate so I am unable to get a picture.
I'm glad you guys think she looks fine. She usually is a bright vibrant blue and being grey...
I was able to get my A seemanni out but I'm afraid she has already been "molded". Her "head" looks shriveled a little and when you shine a light on her it appears to be covered with white fuzz. It is too late to help her?
