I used that method to make bamboo inlet pipe on a turtle tank. (I'll try to snap a pic in a bit) Used 4" pvc sanded the writing off, used a candle to make the nodes. Used "Testers" model paints to get a green, live bamboo look.
I like natural looking enclosures and furniture. I was thinking when I end up with slings that I would use nut shells for hides. Maybe cut or file the end off of a pecan and scrape out the insides. Brazil nuts, acorns, etc. would all look great, be durable and natural.
