My T has a hallowed log where she likes to hide if she feels threatened (like if I put her back in her cage after cleaning it). She actually doesn't spend too much in it, though.

My enclosure is a 5 gallon. I'm kind of overprotective, though, and if my tarantula feels particularly adventurous and climbs near the top I try to gently urge her back down just to be safe :). Also, if I added more substrate would she burrow?

I'm not that experienced with T's, as I only got my first one a couple of weeks ago, but based off of some research, it seems that predatory mites aren't that picky. I might stay on the safe side and lay off the feeding if the spider's abdomen looks fine.
