    Keeping stag beetles

I was wondering who here has kept stag beetles as pets? How long do they thrive in captivity? I don't have any now, but i want to ask anyone who's had experience keeping them, rather than just looking at a caresheet .

    Pinning insects

I suggest you do a lot of reading on the subject since there are a lot of ways to do it. No, you can't use sewing pins. They can rust and aren't recommended to pin insects. Sizes depend on the insect . For mantids A size 3 should be fine.

I'd go with DNA sexing. It shouldn't cost too much. The people i know who've had it done say its about $20 to have feathers tested at a lab.

How to preserve, relax, and mount inverts.

That's basically it. Looks like the majority of the info is all there. I just freeze the insects once i gather them up and then store them. Others use chemicals in their killing jars. Problem with Fruit fly culture

How big is the culture you started with? They usually remain at the bottom of the culture unless disturbed then move up. I usually opened the top then pour a few out when they started crawling out.You could always use a small deli container or something if you cant find a vial. .

    My Collection

Most pet stores sell fruit fly cultures, they're wingless. They just keep breeding and usually last a month or so.

I would like to find some of those as well. There's hardly any up here. I'm a little bit outside Chicago so there's not that much in a way of anything. Gonna have to travel in the summer to see what i can find..

    Bugs as pets.

Really? I thought they were more of an eastern species. As far as the other scarabs where do you find them? Is it southern Illinois? The prairies and other wooded areas are all protected over here so i usually have to go out of my way somewhere to go collecting.

As far as beetles go, the rhinoceros beetles i would love to have aren't legal as far as i know. Mantids i can get with no problem. Some species of butterflies i wanted to raise cant be shipped here like spicebush swallowtails, pipevine swallowtails and a few others. Which i think its odd...

    Bugs as pets.

I've bought from him once before, the service was great. I was just wondering if there was any other sellers that specialize in the same kinds of insects. If not i'll probably stick with that place.
