  1. Inland Sea Exotics

Review by 'Aurelia' on item 'Inland Sea Exotics'

I am thoroughly impressed with Inland Sea Exotics. Fast communication, ethical and conscientious when it comes to shipping (he looked at the forecast and told me to wait to order because it would be too hot for the slings). I opted for 3rd day with USPS and they arrived to day safe, secure...

    Salticid ID anyone?

This little mustard yellow Salticid was found in Montana. I found it on mosquito trapping equipment while doing some research out in Townsend this Summer. It either rode all the way back from Townsend with me or found its way into the truck bed in Bozeman. I've kept it in a kritter keeper in my...

Didn't really know where to put this-wondering about "class pets"

In 8th grade, I gave my science teacher a few stick insects to keep in her classroom. They reproduced (parthenogenetically) and she ended up giving some to a bunch of other teachers in the school. XD

What kind of insect is this?

    Yes, and it's a male.

I found the strangest thing at work....

It is very small, maybe 1 1/2mm so I don't think a pic would help unless it was with my microscope camera which I have here at home. She just told me to put it in with the other insects in the sample and she would find it later and ask another entomologist. She mentioned it looked like it could...

I found the strangest thing at work....

I work in an entomology lab processing sweep samples. I was going through one under the microscope today and I found what looked to be some sort of arthropod, except it didn't have any legs or eyes to speak of. It had insect-like antennae, body segments like a centipede, and small spider-like...

    Argiope species identification

Hi guys, recently I have seen some Argiope hanging out on tomato plants in a garden. Would anyone like to take a gander at what species? I am in Southwest Montana if that helps at all...

    sexing a mantis

I'm not sure if this goes for all species but for a few that I know, females have 6 abdominal segments while males have 8.

Is wood chip as a substrate, fine for Madagascar hissing cockroaches?

I use oatmeal as bedding, it's also their food. :P

    Spider ID

Sorry, but we really can't do any sort of ID without a picture. That's a really general description and could be one of hundreds of different species. Try to catch one and take a picture of it.

Mosquito sucking my blood at 3x magnification

Female mosquitoes can take another blood meal after they lay eggs from a previous blood meal.

I can vouch for that. I have a rosie who didn't eat for over 2 years after I got her.

Pholcid with massive serrated chelicerae? Or something else?

It takes some practice. :P I don't know of any other mosquito researchers except for my boss whose lab I work in. We get our samples only from Montana and a couple of the surrounding states, so right now I identify about 20 species. It just takes practice and a steady hand, once you get the feel...
