    Helleri for Christmas

Well, he wasn't found on Christmas, but the day after works for me. It was 74 degrees in So Cal today so I decided to hit the field for critters. I found a nice little slender salamander on Christmas day so I figured herps would be out basking. I found plenty of millipedes, lizards, a couple...

Who's Behind the Computer Part 4

I haven't put up a photo in a very long time. Here is one of me on my new Road King. No, those aren't my riding shoes!

Thread Resurrection I never did update this thread. I put this cocoon in a 60 dram vial with some pinholes in the lid. I placed it on a bookshelf and didn't offer any other care. I left town for a few days one week and came back to find a nice blue wasp like the one a few posts back...

    First Rattlesnake of the Year

Thanks everyone. I haven't been out as much as usual, but I steal sneak out for a walk if I have an hour or so to burn. I may add a few more photos this weekend if the rain lays off for a bit. Later, G

    First Rattlesnake of the Year

I had this week off for vacation and had big plans for some hiking and critter seeing. This week happened to be plenty rainy so I decided to dig through some old photos and finally put up another post. Here are a few herps and a tarantula from the last couple of years. Huge alligator lizard...

First find in a long time

Nice find Sky! Those photos just fired me up to plan a hike tomorrow. It might be good for rattlers and kingsnakes this weekend. I'll keep an eye out for T and scorpion burrows too. Later, G

    First Rattlesnake of the Year

Hey Sharpfang, It was captive bred, but the exact pairings couldn't be verified. It certainly has the attitude of a Biak. It is the only chondro I have that regularly tries to remove my face. It also has a very high percentage of bright yellow now that it is an adult.

    First Rattlesnake of the Year

Thanks everyone. It is definitely nice to be able to find herps every month of the year. The heavy rains we are experiencing now are going to make for a great spring as Kyle mentioned. Cal Kings and rattlesnakes should be out in force. I forgot to mention I saw plenty of rodents which will...

    First Rattlesnake of the Year

I took one of my daughters out for a hike a couple weekends ago and we found this nice little Southern Pacific Rattlesnake on January 9th. I tried to find a rattlesnake on January 1st, but I took my chances and headed to an area where I have found Crotalus ruber early in the year...

    Southern California Invert Hunting...

Hi Josh, I haven't done much hiking in salamander territory. I find Batrachoseps sp. in the back yard and that is about the extent of my salamander finds in this state. I have not really done much exploring in the higher elevation areas. I will make it a point to do some...

    Southern California Invert Hunting...

We hit up the area with the are above with all the rocks this weekend. The temperatures were right under 70 degrees F. I was hoping to see a some Red Diamond rattlesnakes as the habitat looked perfect. Luck was on our side and a beautiful Crotalus ruber female was found under a rock...

Thanks cacoseraph and ronin. I found a nice sized S. polymorpha on Christmas eve last year. The weather was too nice to not take a hike. The only photo I took turned out horribly or I would have shared. I caught the male lizard, with the regenerating tail, so my daughter could take a...

    Southern California Invert Hunting...

I have been wanting to find a cocoon in a trapdoor spider to see what emerges ever since I saw the below wasp waiting for a trapdoor to emerge. ...I didn't want to have to dig up several trapdoor burrows to find one though. I lucked out and saw the top of a cocoon down a trapdoor burrow...
