Micro dubia terrarium

A wee terrarium on my desk that houses my band of dubia roaches that I saved from being eaten by someones pet. They mostly hide behind the leafy bits where the heat mat is.
I have a thriving dubia colony, and I rather enjoy them. I think their behavior is really interesting. They probably will always be near that heating mat, as do best in warmer climates with high humidity. They can only breed with those requirement, so if these ever get loose in your house, you don't have to worry about any infestation.

If you have a red flashlight, you can sneak a spy on them in the middle of the night. :D

@Caseyface Glad to see i'm not the only one who likes them. I don't keep it too humid in an attempt to stop them multiplying but one of them still managed to have a few babies, but like the man in jurassic park says, nature finds a way!

@Rodge - Very true you are about nature.

I do like my dubias, even if I breed them just to feed them. :( I'm a monster, I know. I was once observing my adult bin, and picked up a mama dubia away from her freshly birthed roaches. When I was done, I placed her in the corner of the bin. She went straight back to her babies.

My conclusion: Dubia roaches are better than some human parents.

@Caseyface They do seem to have more to them than people would think, I watched one of my lady roaches (the one I assume was the mother) following one of the babies around after it decided to go for a wee jaunt. The males also have a wacky wee mating dance thats fun to watch.
Roaches are people too... Maybe :hungry:

@Rodge - I definitely agree. I think they deserve our respect, technically being our seniors on this planet. ;) I've had my roaches in my care for almost a year now, and they are really great. I honestly really enjoy them. I love their little feeties.

I was even able to sell some nymphs at my local reptile shop when my numbers grew too large, which is not too shabby!

Not too shabby at all! How much do dubia roaches go for in a selling them to a shop scenario?
Have you kept any other roach species? I'd like to get something big and beefy like cave roaches or something similar.

@Rodge - I've personally only ever kept the Dubias, as I wasn't expecting to enjoy them so much! There are several other types of roaches that I am thinking of adding to my strange family. http://www.roachcrossing.com/category/for-sale/cockroaches/roach-type/pet/ has a lot of really interesting roaches for sale, like the Mauritian Zebra-Faced Roach, Black Velvet Roach, and the Question Mark Roach(but they are very slow growing).

I made about 40cents per roach. Considering they were nymphs and ranging in size, I happily took it! :)

40 cents a roach? That sounds like a pretty good price to me, I would have thought maybe 5 max. I shall give that site a wee look :)
So are you mainly about the spiders then? Perhaps a stupid question given the name of this site... How many species do you have?

Right? It helps that I have been working on that professional relationship for over a year. :)

I guess I am mainly about animals, all kinds. I've been catching bugs and spiders since I was, "knee-high to a grasshopper," as my Grandpa would say. As a kid, I spent my summer running around parks catching butterflies with my bare hands and collecting them in make-shift enclosures of two meshed plastic bins on top of each other. At one point, I had like 30 butterflies in my room. My mom wouldn't let me have any four-legged pets, so I found a loophole.

As of late, I have definitely fallen into the tarantula hole, and yesterday marked my 25th tarantula!! :singing: But I also have two bearded dragons, two very silly doggos, and one leopard slug!

My, my, that's quite the selection of miniature monsters you have there! Practically a zoo, is it not hard to remember what's been fed and when an all that sort of thing? Do you have a spreadsheet, I bet you have a spreadsheet. A guy I work with is away on a collecting trip to Mexico so I'm hoping he brings me back some tailless whip scorpions for my next terrarium. Like the vinegaroon they are a bit peculiar and I like a bit of something peculiar.
I get to see a lot of exotic creatures at work but they tend to be dead so it's time to get some live ones I say! :D
