It's in! 2.5 inch G. Pulchra

Finally after months of being incapable of landing one... I've got one! Haven't been this excited since I got my first tarantulas
I miss my G. pulchra so much! They can be difficult to photograph because they're so dark. A little flash helps to pick up more detail.

@nicodimus22 you should get another if you can! A total puppy species from all I can tell from a few minutes with mine

I actually have the flash going in this pic! I couldn't set it any more powerful without completely destroying the color :( I'm stuck using my onboard flash and anything higher than about -1 on the settings washes everything out even with a tiny aperture

I would love to get another one, but at the moment, they are too expensive. Ultimately, I WILL have a female G. pulchra!

Yeah, they can be a PITA to photograph. I used a ring flash which helped somewhat. I'm not a very accomplished T photographer yet, but I do macro photography in the field all the time, which helps.

@nicodimus22 I'm not sure what your limit would be on spending, but I say check out thebugplug.net! That's where I got this one and last I checked they still had 3 smaller ones, around 1.75 inches, for sale, and everything is 20% off. Unsexed though!

I'm still learning photography in general but I absolutely love it! Finally upgraded to a dslr (d3100) and found that macro is without a doubt my favorite style. I mainly use the sun for my lighting but with tarantulas and other small creatures I'm really seeing the need for a decent flash unit. I was thinking about doing a ring light but I really am not sure on what direction to go. I'm almost tempted to get one of those high powered lighting units (thedarkroom uses one in his YouTube videos) and see how well they work since they are really quite cheap

@Screamingreenmachine The constant lights are more for video purposes than still photo purposes.

Thank you for the tip about the G. pulchra, but it's still too expensive for my taste. At that size, unsexed often means "I know it's a male but the customer will pay more if I say it's unsexed."

I have the D7200, but I actually use two older cameras (Panasonic FZ200 and FZ1000 each paired with an achromat) for pretty much all things macro.

This one was taken with the FZ1000+Nikon5T+Yongnuo ring flash:

@nicodimus22 I was wondering if that was the case with the constant light. I love that pic. I'm surprised how even with no visible shadows, it still doesn't look flat. My onboard flash would make that image look flat as a pancake

I know what you mean about being unsexed at that size. I found some males for sale that are around the size of the one I got, selling for quite a large sum each (twice what I paid for mine) so I figured I'd take the chance haha! If it's a male, in however many years it takes to mature, I'll see if I can find a breeder who needs one on a loan or maybe I'll find a female between now and it's maturity and try breeding them myself one day! I would love to see more of this species in the hobby as they seem fairly elusive atm

Sounds like you have a pretty awesome camera collection aha! Would love to get my hands on a 7200 one day, whenever my needs require it! For my macro I use a telephoto 70-300mm nikkor and an adapter who's name I'm drawing a blank on right now. I'll invest in a proper macro lens soon enough!
