Dr. Twizzler's First Hunt
This is my Red Rump Dr. Twizzlers and this picture was taken moments after he killed his first cricket!
Our red rump is just tiny ...just got her 6 weeks ago and she still seems just as tiny and hides 100% of the time. Does yours burrow much?

@TheSanguineSaint mine use to be just like yours, I would never see him. So I changed his cage slightly so he has a tunnel hide and the rest is loose soul so he can't burrow. This way he runs around and I am able to see him but he still feels comfortable in his hide when he needs it.

@Gillian Pajor Tarantulas shouldn't be kept on really loose soil, as it'll shift around under their feet and make it more uncomfortable to walk. Slings like to burrow, they're so tiny when they're young that they need to in order to be less susceptible to predation. You shouldn't be trying to prevent it from doing something it would naturally do to feel safe. Also, that substrate appears to be bone dry, when slings should have slightly damp substrate.

Not trying to be rude or nit-picky, just trying to make sure that cutie gets the best care possible :)

@PidderPeets I know they shouldn't be kept on loose soil and maybe that term was wrong to use it is packed down to a point. it does look bone try in the picture, but I can assure you I would never let it get that way. I know the soil needs to be moist for slings. He has a small hide and a tunnel for himself. He, if willing, has more then enough to dig tunnels and burrow, it is just he doesn't do it as much as when he was younger and the cage change. The cage change probably is the most reason on why he doesn't burrow and I will admit I altered in it a way, so he didn't burrow AS MUCH but still had the option to if he needed as I don't want to stress him out to the point of death.

No I understand that your just trying to help and I understand that. I also realize my disruption and this picture are not the best examples of how his whole cage looks either, so I will get some when I can and show a better picture of his little place.

@Gillian Pajor It's reassuring to hear that I likely just misunderstood! :) I initially thought you meant you kept the substrate so loose that it was literally impossible for it to make a burrow, which would also make it near impossible for the T to be comfortable walking on it. I'm glad I misinterpreted

my little red rump always hides. I have him in a small 3x3 because he is only a 1/2 inch but he has a cool tunnel that goes all the way around the enclosure crickets go down there and they are all done. I'm sure when he gets older he will be out and about more.
