The debate rages about the what hobbyists have been calling the "Peruvian Big Black". The true P. antinous are found in SE Peru and NW Bolivia as the mature males have the metallic blue sheen in their femurs. P. grandis ranges into NE Peru and NW Brazil and the mature males have a purplish-pink sheen in their femurs. Back in the early '90s, a species was collected and exported from Peru from the Iquitos area of NE Peru. Around 2004 to present, the species collected and exported is collected from central eastern Peru (Pucallpa region). Some hobbyists insist on calling them cf. antinous and some refer to them as cf. grandis. I lean on them being cf. grandis based on the locality and the coloration of the mature males. Hopefully the taxonomists can figure it out soon. The Pamphobeteus genus needs revising badly.
@xenesthis thanks for the knowledge about this timeline of the where the wc species come from. Talked to B.Weber and he still gets his cf antinous from Iquitos. And yea, the whole Pampho genus is really jumbled lol.
Facts right now:
1. grandis comes from NE Peru (Iquitos area)
2. cf. antinous "big black" comes from Iquitos as per B.Webber, might be the same with grandis
3. real antinous comes from SE Peru, NW Bolivia.
4. Pamphobeteus genus is messed up lol
question: have you compared species that are labeled as P.cf antinous over this wc grandis? if yes, are there any differences?
