Red Knee Setup

Just add a new bit of cork bark to give my tarantula another hiding home and a more realistic feel
I'm sorry because your cage does look really good and I'm sure it took you a while to set it up but unfortunately like others have said it just isn't suitable for your smithi.

I recommend you keep the container and simply add something else tall in it with a new arboreal tarantula. Then move the B. smithi to a different container. That way your hard work won't be completely wasted. I'm giving you a like based on the beautiful appearance. Maybe a psalmopoeus if you are comfortable with them. Good luck.

@Moakmeister yeah there is not enough substrate but that was when I made it I did not have more substrate so I just left it like that because from my experience it my B smithi has never tried to burrow even when she had a lot of substrate so i just left it like that but there is a good 3inch at least

Thank you all for the advice I am already aware of this but when I next do the tank I will raise the substrate and it if my B smithi where to fall after that then it will be fine because the fall would be from 6 inch drop at most. As of the moment she don't climb and if she dose she goes on the leaves she seems to like lying on them or standing on the rock also the picture makes it look a lot worse than it is. When I say climb I really mean the she goes one the leaves on the log which is like a 2 inch drop and the likelihood of her falling from that is very unlikely and it would do nothing to her. In the wild she would come worse obstacles than that. The tank is 30cm tall over all so its not high at all yes if she climbed to the top of that and fell she would die at the moment I agree but when I next do the substrate she wont. She wont climb that high she knows she cant as for anyone that say the tank is not suitable I guess that people do different things there are a lot of people that have this type of tarantula and other terrestrial tarantulas in the same or similar type of enclosures. I have been in this hobby for 8 years and still have things to learn but I do consider my self adept in keeping tarantulas. I don't want to sound big headed this is just a statement so don't take offense its just so you know i'm not some noob guy I understand if people disagree with me or dislikes what I said but I cant be doing anything that wrong as I have had them for 8 years now.

this looks awesome. I wouldn't worry too much about fall injuries. Spiders have been around for millions of years they aren't anywhere near as clumsy as we think they are. In the wild they face plenty of tall objects that they must climb over, and they risk falling and injuring themselves quite a bit throughout their lives I'm sure. Especially a smithi which can live for over 20 years. I'm pretty sure millions of years of evolution has prepared them for things far worse than an environment that is a few inches too tall. Should you change it? Probably. Is it a dire situation for the T? Nah, not really.

@BMQ thank you that what I was saying in the wild they would have to climb over things that are tall I will raise the sub more when i next clean her out but that's about it as she dont even climb around

@BMQ
The general rule varies between users but what I saw is 1.6x DLS.

There are threads on this board with fall injuries. And occasionally all T's will climb. All it takes is for something to scare the T or gain interest of the T. Some of them take years before the fall injury occurs. Terrestrial T's seem to think they can climb like an arboreal. And overweight ones are the most vunerable. It is like a ticking time bomb.
