Poor little tykes. Big thank you to your sister for letting them stay. They are almost as hated as our spiders are and they are just trying to get by... like all the rest of us.
@Vanessa's My sis and her husband loves them, the mother at times goes off to get some food or waits for the male, they have been using that make shift nest for about 3 years now, my sis said they've had countless broods of either 2 or 3 chick's.
So many pigeon haters in the world, it's despicable. I keep pigeons and they're amazing. There are over 900 breeds of pigeon word-wide compared to only 340 breeds of dog and only 43 breeds of cat. Pigeons have been domesticated for thousands of years and have been an integral part of society for just as long. I hear they're actually one of the oldest domesticated bird species on earth. They come in every shape, size and color you can imagine and some have even won war medals for bravery in carrying messages to allied troops during WWII. The fact that people spit on them, capture them to shoot in Pennsylvania (live pigeon shoots), and even poison them intentionally makes me sick to my stomach. Pigeons are definitely not disease bags and are absolutely 100% deserving of our respect and admiration. Hating a species because it flourishes in urban areas is ridiculous. Pigeons don't have any noticeably negative impact on their environment because they only survive in urban areas off of the garbage we leave around. You'll never see a pigeon in the forest out competing a songbird for nesting spots or for food. The only nuisance pigeons can be blamed for is pooping on parked cars even though pigeons only poop where they perch so it's not like a seagull where they'll fly over your car and shit on it mid air. Long story short, pigeons are awesome and no one who loves tarantulas, roaches, or any other bugs should hypocritically point at another animal and go "Those, those are the real vermin!", especially a species as noble as the domesticated pigeon. Interested in seeing some pretty pigeon breeds? Try googling Jacobins, Old German Owls, Saxon Shields, Fantails, Dragoons, Scandaroons, White Homers, Satinettes, Archangels, etc.
And yes, they are very very cute, just as cute as a baby tarantula or a baby puppy. Pigeons mate for life, both parents take turns feeding their young and they are EXTREMELY intelligent animals. Pigeons pass the mirror test and can self recognize, they can recognize faces, patterns, shapes, colors and can be as tame as a dog. I love my pigeons and I think more people would love them if they stopped believing hateful stereotypes of what they allegedly are.
People love doves, doves are the symbol of peace and everything great in this world and people HATE pigeons. Newsflash for those people. Pigeons ARE doves. They're so closely related they can produce hybrid offspring! The hybrids are mules and can't reproduce but they're both two peas in a pod. Most "doves" released at weddings and funerals are white homing pigeons. Releasing real doves (which happens) results in the death of those doves as they are not capable of surviving outside of captivity as they have no training for survival and are poor flyers. Releasing white homers is much more humane because they fly back home and can be used over and over. Plus they get great exercise.
