@RezonantVoid Mostly it's just a matter of people unwittingly shoving their hands into a web and pressing the spider against their skin.
There is an experiment with black widows that demonstrated that not only do they not want to bite (the only way to force a bite was to press their mouths down against the hand), but many of the defensive bites were dry.
It's a bit like our beautiful red-bellied black snakes (Pseudechis porphyriacus). They are such gentle creatures. You generally have to do a lot for them to bite. Unwitting, accidents will help.
That's most likely the case with most Latrodectus hasselti bites. Where they like to hang out is where they are often accidentally pressed.
