I just purchased a roughly 2.5 inch or so GBB from a local reptile shop. The T was power fed where I got it from, so I let it settle for two days before throwing in food. A bit later I come home and notice the cricket hasn’t been touched, and that her fangs are red? Something I need to worry about?
A GBB that size with fangs that red didn't moult a week ago IME, I'd say less. So, I'd wait at least another week. Or just wait until her fangs pitch black again (much better indicator).
And even then it could be that she won't eat right away, which won't be a problem. Just make sure she has access to clean, unobstructed water.
@Thekla thank you for that. Yeah I have a clean water dish I’m replacing every two days, or sooner if empty. Would you advise misting as well until she is able to eat again? I know I normally wouldn’t because they like it bone dry.
@Ungoliant Awesome that’s what I thought, thank you all so much! It really freaked me out seeing the red I thought they were bloody. How naive I was haha. Definitely explains her not eating though!
No, don't mist. GBBs are an arid species, they need their sub bone dry. And if your water dish is empty after such a short time, then the water has probably been sucked out by webbing, not from your GBB drinking. Make sure that doesn't happen either. Clean the water dish, before replacing the water.
@Thekla yupyup!! I’m actually very meticulous when it comes to my pets haha. I replace the whole dish and water every time. But that’s just because I’m slightly ocd hygienic. Thank you for all your help!
Sorry to bring thing post back to life’s but her abdomen seems super small now and I know she’s probably fine but it worries me. Should I feed or wait a bit longer? Can’t get a look at her fangs unfortunately >.<
Assuming the picture is from Saturday, I'd definitely wait. As long as her abdomen isn't shrivelled and she has access to clean water, she'll be fine. If you feed her too early she could break a fang (or even both), then you'd have a real problem.
And don't obsess about the water and stress her out unnecessarily. As long as there's water in the dish and it isn't soiled with dirt or poop, it's enough when you change it on a weekly basis.
