@Venom1080 I'm not so sure. While a bite in the finger, aside from the pain, isn't deadly, let's not forget that in the Philippines, according to rumors about, a little girl died after a bite in the neck from an Asian centipede, as well for a man in his 40 in Turkey, bite in the chest. I do recognize that, both bites, were delivered in very sensitive body parts but still, extreme caution, always.
@Venom1080
I was reading somewhere that these are worse than the strongest of OW venom. "Bite" reports of people saying their [insert OW here] was second only to these babies.
I don't want (nor like) to exagerate or overestimate facts. But centipedes venom is, however and obviously, different from Theraphosidae one, first thing first to consider. Now, among the centipedes, Asians ones when venom is concerned are the very badass one, everyone correct me if I'm wrong. Those are no jokes.
@bryverine@Chris LXXIX whoops, my bad then, could've sworn i read that here. i say go for it, you wont regret it. as long as the set up is good, they cant bolt out and tag you. (cant climb smooth surfaces)
@Venom1080 I completely agree with you on that. Unlike arboreal T's, they can't jump/semi jump, and, for bite, they need to enter in total contact with you. Only issue is their otherwordly escape ability. Btw I will check mine now, lol
@Venom1080 I may have messed up in the math, but you got me curious.
Straight Venom LD50=750ug/kg
Isolated Protein LD50=41ug/kg "Poisonous Plants and Animals of Florida and the Caribbean", David w. Nellis, 1997 pg 273
Volume yield 5.4+/-0.5uL
Protein Yield 113+/-11 ug/ul "Variation in venom yield and protein concentration of the centipedes Scolopendra polymorpha and Scolopendra subspinipes", Toxicon 82 (2014) 30–51. 2014
Therefore:
Total protein yield
5.4+/-.5uL*113+/-11ug/ml=615.7+/-115.9ug
(Max=731.6ug)
731.6ug/LD50=731.6ug/41ug/kg
Lethal to around 17.8kg (39.2 lbs)
This is about the average weight of a 5 year old.
This compared to Matabuey's max weight kill for a S. calceatum of 5.75kg (12.7lb) or the average weight of a 2 month old baby.
