It's setup that way so that I can have more space for more roach colonies, there is more in the means of cleaning the colony (using a paintbrush and sweeping the feces in another container for compost) and it allows a more even heating surface (heating cables are wrapped around the bucket). There is a lid for this bucket and its vented. Last time I checked inside it was quite warm and humid.
