Hello all,
Today my girlfriend tried to pick up our rosie who is the biggest sweetie in the world. But instead of slowly meandering up her hand like she usually does, she tried to bite her!!!She went up in threat position and everything! Both of us were shocked! We couldn't believe it!!She has NEVER, EVER, EVER displayed even 1/100th of this type of aggression before today. And the most peculiar thing was that she was perfectly fine when we guided her into a smaller tank.(we were cleaning her gross smelling tank..haha) She meandered from the bigger tank to the smaller tank, and vice versa. Guys I'm so flippin stumped! My girlfriend refuses to handle our rosie anymore, and I'm quite queasy of the thought of handling her....Is she (the rosie) Taranula PMSing? haha...

welcome to G. roseas :(

i think they *all* are insane, deep down, but some of them just don't know it yet.

mine went from being all sweetness and light, to an unholy terror, to a grumpy old man (even though it's a female). i've held her very briefly since she's hit the grumpy old man phase.

pretty much, your days of "picking her up" are over. i guide mine to my hand with a paint brush now. if she attacks the paint brush, i don't hold her for a couple/few weeks.

I've had more threat displays from my rosies than any other t's I own. Of course, they are half hearted displays. That's why I named mine Cybil(from that old show about the lady with multiple personalities), and Norman Bates(from the movie Psycho).

Mine shows his front legs as soon as anything artificial moves infront of him. May it be me boldly removing the water dish or if I pick up a bolus or whatever. Gets up on his hind legs emediatly the old grumpy spider he is.

One of these days I'm gonna try and figure out if I can sue someone for that :D

my Cliff (still not sure if its really a boy) usually hangs out in his corner when i get his water dish or fix something in his cage. and last night i was repositioning his half log so he would have more room and so i could take the water dish out and clean it and he hung out in his corner. well... he began to slowly creep towards me and got closer and closer and closer. i wasnt sure if he was gonna bite me or if he was just curious and checking things out, i didnt leave my hand in long enough to find out. i removed my hand before it got to it. he then waited there a second then turned around and calmly (as he walked up) went back to his corner and sat all sprawled out. this morning i found him in the same spot my hand was in.

ive learned they are quite weird!

Yeah, weird indeed. She's now crawling all around the sides of the tank. She's been doing this for about the past hour and a half. I really, really, really don't get this Tarantula.....I'm going to take a shot in the dark though and say that she's doing this because I changed her substrate?

P.S.-My Grossa's just as weird....She basically attacked my hand yesterday as I reached in to put her water back. But then she kinda sprawled accross it...So I'm guessing she did that because she was dehydrated?

:wall: <-Me trying to figure out my Grammostolas...

I remember long time ago when I had my rosie, it would always flip its personality between good and bad. But then again I think thats part of their charm. :D

Yanno Sub, if someone came in and took all my 'stuff '..... my webs, my comfy mat, my food mats, and all, I'd want to kick thier arse too! Wouldn't you?? Then I'd have to look at the destruction from all sides, see if I could find anything of mine left, have a tantrum, then redecorate.

I predict the redecorating will commence at any time now and she will forget all about your 'intrusion' and be as sweet as she always has been ;)

Well my female didn't do anything, it was my male that gave me the threat pose and scared me alittle :)

I hope so, but the thing that really bites is that she tried to bite my girlfriend before we even changed her substrate. I'm thinking she tried to bite my girlfriend because we moved her tank out into the kitchen where I could actually have space to clean out her tank.

Yeah, my rosea can be a bit nuts. I don't handle any of my Ts, but she gets in her moods every once in a while when I'm trying to clean out her encloser (or even filling up her water dish!).

Glad I'm not alone here, i've only had my Rosie a few weeks, she was calm until now, but now as soon as the lid is opened she'll start threatening and has started attacking anything that moves in her tank, including the tongs i use to change her water dish and clean her tank with, sometimes running from one side of the tank to the other just to attack (she's in a 24" tank), I didn't know she could move that fast, do they grow out of this?. I was thinking of handling her occasionally, but have now decided not to.

they seem to have thier off days/weeks but yea, once they start, you never know.

thats why whenever someone wants to hold my female, I have to poke her and see if she's pissy or not. hehe.

awww I didn't even know people were still posting on this thread! I'm so sad now! My girlfriend and I have been broken up for a month, so I don't even get to see Fluffy (the rosie) anymore!! (Hence why I'm going to by another T) My ex tells me though that she paces around her tank when she's hungry, like some possessed demon....

After years of debating "should I / shouldn't I" get a tarantula, I finally picked up my first about 6 months ago. She is a treasure and I adore her. I quickly learned that she had unusual habits. But in the last month, she's seemed to become "temperamental;" at first she stopped eating for a couple weeks, worrying me ... then she became a grump. She pounces on anything that goes near her or takes a "strike" pose. This worried me because I could handle her without any trouble before her fasting.

This week I was going to attempt to get her accustomed to me again, thinking maybe the length of time since I took her out might be part of the problem, but after reading this thread, I feel better knowing it's just more of her unusual ways and it's best to just let her be.

Grumpy or not, she's still a doll :)
