Some time ago I bought a Hyst labeld as hercules. Now it's sub adult male (his pic is in my photo thread). When he was a sling he was dark grey/dark brown in pre moult.
Now I bought another Hysterocrates also labeld as hercules but is red (?!?). The coulor is something between brown and red. That's not a crawshayi for 100%. What spec. of Hysterocrates is possible? What colours have spiderlings of this species?

The type to H.hercules is quite badly damaged and it's not really possible to say if any spiders sold under that name are the real thing or not, but if your spider's back pair of leg's is incrassate (swollen) then it is almost certainly not H.hercules.

I'll second that. It sounds like your new sling might be H. gigas from your discription. Mine is kind of a brown/red looking fat dude....not that I've seen it since it molted though. :wall:

It is s aid that H. hercules will probably never be in the pet trade, so what you have is most likely either H. gigas or H. crassipes .

So Hysterocrates gigas slings are often brown/red, isn't they?

This is the pic of the sling.

Also, with this genus, there will be considerable color differences after and before a molt. It will start as black right after it molts and slowly fade to a red/brown until it molts again. I have a couple of pictures to show you a good example, but not right now. I'll show you later.

100% right even H.ederi i had (real one's bred from wild Bioko Island stock) which are near to jet black can fade badly if they have not moulted for sometime.

Also most Hysterocrates in captivity that have been C/B over a number generations have the chance of having mixed blood IMO, has they were often mislabelled for example H.crassipes and H.gigas were sold with there names swapped over (this happened in the UK and iv read here it also happened in the US) may of these spiders dropped egg sac's it may well be that when the problem was stored ppl still had captive born young under the wrong names and mated male's to the wrong female's :(.
