After 10 months, "Pandora" my Mexican black velvet (aphonopelma caniceps) has molted. It's been especially long since she is still small, was about 2 1/4". I've been waiting for her to molt for a few months now. She had gone from her gorgeous velvet black to a dull dark brown and had lost quite a bit of hair along the sides of her abdomen. Only last week did I notice her bald spot turn black and it's been a loooong week since! Today, she finally molted and is absolutely gorgeous! I am in la-la-land since all has gone well and she is back to her brilliant color.
Here is a pic of her before the molt. The picture is a little misleading as her carapace didn't appear shiny gold like in the pictures in regular light. I think it's a product of the flash.
Here is my beauty today, freshly molted:
Now for the sex confirmation
I'm pretty sure Pandora's a she but I would appreciate any input from you. I'm by no means an expert and just starting to get the hang of it myself, well, I hope I am!
I was also wondering, is this species still refered to as a aphonopelma caniceps? It seems to have changed in the past and I would like to know the appropriate latin name.
Anyone else keep these? What have been your experiences with this species? Mine isn't aggressive at all but doesn't settle down like my other aphonos, she'll walk around at a good pace and explore everything she can when out of her enclosure. Has a great appetite but doesn't need much to keep her abdomen nice and plump.
A definite favorite of mine, and now she's all pretty again
