Well, I've been waiting to share this with you all but I with their recent molts, it is time for me to bring the info to the public. My 2 Haplopelma costale just molted in the last couple of weeks and I have a male and a female. In the next couple of weeks, I will start feeding the female and the male will be shark tanked in her enclosure shortly after. It is very important that these two breed successfully so please send lots of good vibes! For now, enjoy the pictures of this amazingly beautiful species!!!

-Kelly

P.S. Don't try to make any offers on my female, please. She is spoken for.

The first set of pictures are from before they were sexed:

A few more unsexed pictures and then the mature male. Note how small these two are!

Hope you like the pictures! I'll keep you updated on the breeding.

And anyone who has a female, drop me an email or PM so we can be sure this male gets lots of booty! {D

They are gorgeous spiders! Where did you get them? Good luck on your breeding endeavour.

They are no longer available but they were originally (as far back as I know) from Frank Somma. It is possible that they were from one of Volker von Wirth's sacs but I don't know for sure. They have never been bred in the U.S. and I've never seen them on a dealer pricelist. I got these two from a private breeder.

Wow! How lucky is that to find out you have both sexes available at the same time! Lots of luck on the mating :D

I know!!! :) :) :) The male molted out mature first and I had thought the 2nd one was a female but I needed a molt to be sure. I about peed my pants when I found the leaf!!! :) :) :) I just found out about the female tonight, hence my giddiness and inability to keep quiet about my collection gems any longer!!! :D

Beautiful Kel, can we get a shot of the male for perspective?

I posted pics of the mature male... he looks totally different after his mature molt! I posted a shot of him with a ruler as well as on my hand... and a picture of the female on the same hand (but on a different day!).

Ok.. must have been MBS. So are you going to try them at this size? When I talked at length with Jack (Haploman) about breeding H. aureopilosum, before he sent me Scott's male, he said that his female was just smaller than the male he had. Mine of course dwarfed him and ate him, but Scott and Jack got spiderlings out of his smaller female..

Yeah, I'm definitely going to breed them. They are both about the same size. They are actually from the same sac. I had no clue they would be mature at this size but I've been keeping touch with Martin and Volker.... they've been SO helpful. They have said that breeding these two would be fine, and that I *should* breed them, since this species hasn't been bred in the U.S. They told me that Haplopelma females mature much earlier than most people think. I'm hoping that by posting about the costale, some U.S. people who have females will come out of the woodworks so this male can see lots of action! But my female has first dibs. ;)

As long as you give me a fair price for one of the little ones, I'm happy ;)

An absolutely stunning spider. Probably my favourite Haplo. Fingers, toes and everything else crossed for a successful breeding. All the best!

Volker has never bred them. I guess yours are bred by Vladimir ŠEJNA – the only I am aware of who has bred them so far.

this species doesn't get big. According to ŠEJNA (2003) his biggest female died with a bodylength of 4,5 cm (legspan of 11 cm) and males have a bodylength of about 3 cm (leg span from 9 to 10,5 cm).

one shouldn't expect too many slings. ŠEJNA (2003) had 24, 26 and one egsack with 49 slings – if I where Kelly and would have breeding success I wouldn’t sell any slings but part them with two or three well known and experienced breeders of Ornithoctoninae, to split the risk and build together with them a breeding group. I think the main goal with this species should be to establish good breeding groups to conserve them for the hobby!

All the best,
Martin

That is a real beauty!
It's one of the smallest Haplopelmas. Pity that there is so few slings.

Kelly,
Congratulations on getting the pair. They are truly a beautiful spider. I you do end up getting spiderlings and decide to sell them off, please let me know as I would be interested in one or two.
Good luck and please keep us all updated.

I agree with Martin, although it's not easy! :( Haps are quickly becoming my favorites, and of course I would love to have a sling... but Martin's right. They should be conserved for breeding purposes only until there are enough for EVERYBODY!! {D

Absolutely. It might upset some people, but in the long run it's for the best that a robust breeding group is established before slings are sold off to all and sundry.

I'm admittedly upset! :( But my Ts have taught me how to be patient!
