I apologize for the terrible pictures, my camera is on its way out the door. Picked this Tarantula up today for 20.00 (Cage included) while getting crickets. The pictures don't show how black he/she is in the legs. The hairs are longish and whispy, they appear to be pink?

Thank you!

I doubt its a curly hair. doesn't look hairy enough . going by the price possibly an aphonopelma species.

The tarantula was a 'turn-in' - The clerk told me an old woman brought him/her in earlier today, saying that her son had left for college and she did not want the responsibility any longer. The clerk would not touch the cage, let alone open it and have a look - she just said '20 bucks?' and I agreed. ;) I thought possibly a Grammastola Pulchra, but her/his butt isn't as black as the rest of her/him, it is more of a dark brown? :?

Definitely not B. albopilosum.
Have to go with John here, it looks like Aphonopelma.
If you could get a clearer picture it should be easy to narrow down.

John, your eye is incredible - I looked through the Aphonopelma and found "Aphonopelma Caniceps", it looks like a match. One of these sites says this is the 'Big Bend Gold Carapace', another calls it the 'Mexican Black Velvet', Which is it? Skinder does not have a care sheet, does anyone know what he/she requires? I'll take some better pictures when my new camera gets here.

Thank you again!!!

A shiny or irridacent carapace (goldish ) confirms my guess it is a rosie. All do respect to JJJ he was going by price i.e. cheap. It looks darker because the pic is inferior. There is nothing wrong with a rosie.

L.parahybanas have a black carapace, in the pic you can clearly see thats not the case

it could be a L. parahybana but somehow I still think its an aphonapelma now which species is really hard to tell.

I am 90% positive that is not a rosie. now I could be wrong but it looks way to dark even in bad lighting rose hairs still look brownish and have a little pink on the carapace. and I was going more by the looks than the price. I just used price to rule out things like brazilion blacks and L. parahybana but since it was sold to a pet store as an unknown then who knows for sure what it is

I have a couple of Rose Hairs here, there is no comparison - the shiny carapace isn't there, nor is there any hint of pink (other than the whispy hairs) - it's a dull deep brown. Her/his legs are *black*, and the butt is a dark brown. I'm going to mess with the lighting and try for a better picture!

I concede the legs look to dark. I just think it's the pic. The only aphonopelma species I have is a 3/4 in seemani so I'm not familiar with that genus. But now my curiosity is peaked and I want to know what it is.

take it ouside and get a picture in the sunlight... that gets the best results in my opinion.

Alright, about 30 pictures later this is what is left - I drug the whole situation outside and took 17 pictures - every single one came out with these splashes of yellow 'static' all over everything - the camera has truly had it, and so has the spider - she/he is quick, and crabby. Hope these are more helpful!

Kind of looks like G. pulchra to me. Maybe in serious need of a molt?

Looks more to me like Aphonopelma anax.

Then again classifying most aphonopelmas is next to impossible at a hobbyists level.
