I'm really interested to see what do you guys think about this and if in fact you have catched this "smell" in your Parhybanas too :D.

Years ago, when I had my first Lasidora Parahybana,I Remember very well that as soon as I got her home, and opened the lid I noticed a very very subtle smell. Very particular one. It didnt smell bad at all, nothing nasty, just a subtle very particular smell really hard to describe.

I thought, hm. it maybe this tarantula in particular, for some reason...Or it maybe in my head.

Then 2 years ago, after years of keeping the Parahybana, got another really large female.
And suddenlyl there it was, the same particular smell!.
I really thought about posting here and share it with you guys, but for some reason I didn't.

Well, today, I go another specimen, really large and beautiful, female too...
And when I opened the lid to house her, I got a little close but softly not to take a breath of her itchy hairs...And there it was. The very same subtle particular smell.

Does anybody here have had a somehow similar experience?

For some reason I think its only on the large ones and so far females, because I have had a couple smaller ones and I dont think I smelled it.

Maybe since they are bigger, the smell is more noticable?

The smell is to make you come closer so it can give you a face full of hair. {D

Ive never had a parahybana but since you said you've noticed it only from the females I think I might have an explanation. It could be a pharamone to attract mates. Maybe in the wild mates are hard to come by and they use this smell to make it easier to find eachother. Who knows I could be wrong.

I've got two in the 4" range and a sling and don't notice any smell yet. I'll check again when they get a bit bigger.

And on a side note Fran:

I hope you appreciate the look I just got from my wife when I got up from my computer to sniff some tarantulas for you

hahaaha lol {D

Yeah, I was sniffing her too and my wife was like

I have had 4 and 5 inchers and I didnt notice any smell.

This one I got today is about 8+ and she smells exactly like the ones before :D
Somehow that comment Exo made about "spice" does fit the description of the smell...Its really weird :)

LP sniffing? :? This isn't some variation of toad-licking, is it? Are you guys feeling okay? How many fingers? *waves*

Never noticed any odor from L. parahybana but widows, L. hesperus in particular, seem to have a distinct odor. Not bad at all, really. Kind of sweet, spicy, and musty at the same time. I've actually smelled the same aroma from different kinds of wood. Kinda strange.

Mine too, but I've seen enough pics of Fran to know better than to tease him :D
Haha, but Fran has such a nice disposition! Just in case though, I think I'll keep on his good side from now on... no more Fran-teasing... if I can help it :D

Seriously though... please be careful when you sniff the butts. Gives me shivers just thinking about the consequences, yipes!

This topic just talked me out of this species.
The stink from my geckos (who I miss dearly) was bad enough, and the mealworms also stink. No more pet smells!
