k so i just looked in on my ts, and my biggest gbb just molted and looks still looks the same. that must mean my gbb is 3i now, and the other two (right behind in size) are still 2i? hobo is that the pattern ALL GBBS get?

Yes yes yes. I love my GBB. The colors get better and better with each molt. Mine finally got the bright metallic blue legs with this last molt and holy crap. Talk about a gorgeous specimen. Still has a tiger butt tho.

Probably my favorite species. Just because of the ease of care (by ease, I mean virtually no care due to their simplistic husbandry and needs overall). Not to mention the feeding frenzies. By far my favorite T to feed. Straight brutality.... FINISH HIM

Yup. I assume the tiger stipes become much less pronounced as the orange bristles start to become darker on the abdomen, although they were still somewhat visible on my male.

Just in case, I wouldn't try to guess the instar based on how big it is, or the color scheme (at least with just my info). I've noticed a lot of variation between siblings in terms of size, and some slight ones in markings within the same instar. Only time will tell how and when they all gradually change. I am keeping a bunch of these no matter what, so we'll find out eventually.

Those photos provided here give a good indicator, I think.

I have some photos of my GBB from each molt from 2nd instar-present, and looking back through them, the difference between 2nd and 3rd is subtle, although there is a difference, which I think can be seen in Hobo's shots too...

There is a slight change in femur colour between 2nd and 3rd with the blue hue very subtly emerging; this might only be seen best if some natural light reveals the iridescence, and will, for the most part, still look black a lot of the time.

4th instar photos of my GBB are consistent with Hobo and web eviction's shots; the whole femur turned unmistakeably blue.

5th instar should see all-blue limbs emerge.

@Grayzone, I would imagine if you haven't noticed a whole lot of change, colour-wise with your GBB after it settled down after the last molt, then it is probably 3rd instar, as the blue colour to the femur is pretty conclusive at 4th instar.

Hope that helps.

I'm back, and with my moddly powers I'm able to edit my old post to include the latest instar!
Hopefully by the time I finish, I'll still have a canadian penny to compare it to.

EDIT (1/24/13):
And today, I've added sixth instar. Although she didn't get that much bigger, her blue is just starting to show underneath her tan legs and capapace.

Rise, thread.
Rise!!

Anyway, I've still been adding to this thread, and had some interesting, if obvious, findings.
First, yes, they are taking forever to grow as I'm feeding them the bare minimum. What's interesting is that compared to the what others have posted earlier in this thread, it appears that mine are having "extra" molts. For example, in Ludedors link, it shows a male from 1/2" to 3" molting four times. Mine are about 1.5", still have tan on the legs and have molted five times since being .5" (they were about that size at 2i). How many more molts will they have until they reach 3" and look like that male, I wonder?
I was expecting mine to have the same amount of molts and growth, but just longer intermolts, but I guess not! And for those who might say males grow faster, the female is the largest, and the males I've sexed are still following her rough size and molt schedule.

Second thing is the variation. Pictured below is one of the siblings of the female I'm documenting:

This one is a molt behind, but is already showing more blue in the legs than the female.
This one is male. I have a few other darker ones, and will be keeping an eye on their molts to see if they are male as well, but I have sexed other male siblings at the same instar that display more tanned legs like the female.
