This is a recent aquisition of my husband. He has always wanted one of these. This is a female H. lividum, and she has a very large lump on her abdomen. Apparently she has had it for a very long time, and has gone through several molts without it going away or rupturing. She may be wild caught, but I don't know for sure. Could it be a parasite? Or something else? Anyone seen anything like this?

Last time I saw this, my T was being eaten inside out by maggots.
One thing that comes to mind when I read your post!

And I hope that isn't the case here.

If it were the maggots wouldnt the spider be showing signs of pain or some kind of discomfort? Is it possible for spiders to have some kind of cancer? I ask because the post said she had been through several molts. I know one of my emperor scorps has a similar affliction on her side.

It may be the consequence of an injury in the wild. The area was weakened and growth stretched out after a good meal or two. If it has gone through molts like this, I would think you have a 'survivor' . Since she does not appear stressed or in discomfort, I would think she will keep going. In my care, I would not power feed her.

Nice looking bug! ;)

Well I hope it's nothing serious, and I think if it was maggots it would have been dead already wouldn't it? I was thinking a parasite of some sort, but then it has molted several times. I don't know, she is a gorgeous spider though. I was thinking if one of the mature males is a H. lividum, I could have bred them. But she hasn't burrowed yet, does it usually take them some time? We started one for her but she still hasn't used it.

maggots - whot is this??
Maggots are larvae of flys. They look like little white worms. I hope they are not maggots, but on the plus side, if they are, u can use them for food and get ur revenge

Hernia?

OK I am not a total waste of gray matter today, I remember reading something similar to this in the tarantula keeper's guide(pg 161). Although the short section on it was about Brachypelma albopilosum and it seems the scablike lesion usually developed on the underside. The link spidermonkey provided also led to some Ts with similar problems. Since the lividum has the lump on top I guess it would rule out rough substrate as a cause.
Genetic defect? Molt problem?
The outcome for the B albopilosum in the T keeper's guide was pretty grim, but this may not be the same thing.
Best of luck. Hope a few molts will heal it up.

Thank you for that link. I read that a few spiders that had lumps like this had them shrink down in size with successive molts. She really is a beauty, and she attacked a cricket tonight with gusto! Thanks everyone!

That is not cancer and it certainly isn't maggots {D
Cancerous lumps grow and tend to bald. She's be dead if it were maggots.

How long have you had her? have you seen an exuvium?

This could be a 'birth deformity' or a nondevelped part of a 'twin' ( not really a twin, just a crowded environment where they fused in early development )
The two thingys on the lump would make this more feasible).

So if it has not grown and she is otherwise healthy...it shouldn't matter to it's living a normal life. It doesn't even look like a healed injury.

Those of you that laugh at me may do so....but time will tell huh!!?? ;P

I've only had her a few days. The person I got her from had her for a long time though, that is how I know she has molted like this. I guess it really could be almost anything. She also has one front foot that is bent at an odd angle. I think it's been broken. But, she seems okay and is eating. Poor thing! I wonder if she has forgotten how to burrow, she was not set up to burrow before. And she hasn't even tried to use the pre-started one, just sits out in the open! Oh well, I'll enjoy her while I can see her! I'm able to get great pictures of her and the blue just shows up amazing in the pics.

Thanks again for all the responses, I found the non-developed twin one very interesting! :D

I wasn't saying it was maggots, just was my last experience with 'lumps". And, yes, she would be dead already if it was maggots.

I honestly don't know what this could be. Maybe just a deformity?
