So I go to the lps where I get crix and I go to check on their T. blondi only to find it in a death curl. It is approximately 6-7 inches. I hurry to let one of the guys there know about it and tell them what we need for an ICU. They let me go in their storage area and find what I needed. I wet each folded paper towel individually and lined the sides of the clear plastic deli cup I found. I only put 2 small holes in the top so as to try and keep the humidity up. The T moved slightly while I was moving it into the ICU so I know it's not dead yet. I had them place it in the back of the store away from all of the customers. All this time I'm being bombarded by questions from customers who think I work there at this point. All of the usual questions about what do you do with T's, why do you keep them, are they "poisonous"? I tried to answer everyones questions honestly and in a way they would understand. I also took the sponge out of the water dish and explained to the guy that was helping me the disadvantages of it. Like the fact a T can't get water from them.:wall: He understood completely, but he's not the manager who keeps going back to the sponge and woodchips for substrate. I'm going to call them here in a minute before they close to see how it's doing. If you guys want I will keep you updated. I'm worried b/c they have the T on carpet, which one of it's tibial hooks got stuck on, to where they can't keep the humidity up like it needs. If anyone has any advice to give me please do.

tell them that they are idiots and to not import or buy any more tarantulas. It's that simple.

+1

and yes, please keep us updated on how it does. Tell that manager he's only going to lose money and Ts. He won't care about the latter, but the former might get him. The worker's helpless, if a manager is ignorant, there's pretty much nothing that can be changed.

It's only the manager that keeps fouling things up. The employees are good guys that own various reptiles and other animals. They are always receptive to any information that I give them. They genuinely care about their animals they have for sale. I'm calling up there tomorrow to speak with Robert, the manager, to check up on the T and let him know all the requirements to keep a T. blondi. I don't have one myself. I'm sticking with my LP and 29 other T's. I'll get this one if he works out some kind of deal for me to pay him off over time. I doubt this will happen, but he has sold me a 4 in. H. mac female and 4 in. female C. fasciatum for $10 apiece since no one else would buy them. They haven't lost any of the T's they've had so far. I think I've bought almost every T they've ever had. I'm gonna call now and check to see if it's showing any positive signs of health.

I just got off the phone with one of the employees and they said it hasn't moved much. They said they would moisten the towels again before they leave in a few minutes. I really hope the T makes it and I would love it if the manager realizes they shouldn't have it and works something out for me to get it. I've actually tried getting a job at this place, but I'm sure you can imagine how that worked out. I doubt the pay would be anything but slave labor wages. I just think I would enjoy working there while I go back to school. Almost everytime we're in there I wind up educating customers about all types of different animals that they have. I'll update tomorrow.

T blondi do not have tibial hooks ... anyway.
it may benefit from having water dropped into its mouth directly with an eye dropper. or placing a shallow dish of water in and putting it face down it the dish leaving the abdomen out of the water.

I thought all T's had hooks at the end of their feet. All I know is when I picked it up its foot got stuck on the carpet.

If they would let me take it home and babysit it I would. I might ask the manager tomorrow. It's the only pet store that my girlfriend and I go to since they skimp on the crix like others do. So, maybe he would let me watch after it, but I don't really see the need for that. I will probably go back up there on Monday to check on it in person. If it hasn't gotten any better then I will try and set it over a water dish.

Hmm, it appears suffering T. blondis are all the rage. Here are some pics snapped at my LPS store, a week back.

The poor thing was on gravel, and I've seen it climbing all the way to the top and falling down numerous times(It's an 18 x 18 x 18 exo terra). There's a water dish, but it was just moist, and an aquarium "hide" only frequented by small 2 week old crickets. I know it's hard to see, but it also has a rather large bump on the bottom left size of it's abdomen, I'm guessing some internal bleeding from falling so much.

Of course I try to tell them what they were doing wrong (everything), but all the employees were Summer-work-highschoolers and didn't even know they carried "Tarantulas" on sale (They had numerous B.smithis and G. rosea sub adults RIGHT behind them when I asked how much the Ts were. No, they did not know the COMMON names either (suprise), or the prices. How the hell were they even hired??), nor the code for the lock! Apparently, only the manager knows the combo, but he'd gone home for the day. So I was told they'd let him know, but I doubt they did at all. So I had to reluctantly leave it there, I may go back tommorrow if I have the time.

What is wrong with all these lps? Why do they try to add gravel for aquariums that cost like 20$ for 20lbs, when they could use a cocunut brick and cover much more or get some soil from home depot and be able to be use on like all their tanks for a year. You can get some mass bails of peat moss or some cheap 5-10$ bags. i also dont kow about the sponge as they always look filthy, yet they are still there. I think its much easier and cleaner just to add a couple pebbles. Another problem is the tank sizes as some are in tiny tanks while others are in huge tanks that are much to high.

I get why they may want a bare tank to show the t, but you can still have the right substrate and water setup. Another thing with trying to force the t to be in the open besides stress is it paints a picture of t's and makes customers think they are viewable when really half the time many arnt as some burrow and others just hide. I am happy though that walmart at least realized they suck at caring for fish and now alot of stores are getting rid of selling live fish and now sticking to supplies. Lets just hope other pet stores realize if they cant care for somethign properly dont sell it or at least learn to correctly. Its also stupid how at most lps managers dont even know jack about half the things they sell and are too lazy to look up proper care. Like if you dont know i doubt it would be hard to spend an hour on google when you get home or even when at the store if they have internet.

Update

I just got off the phone with the manager. No good news yet. It has now been almost two days since I made them an ICU. I told the manager about pinch grabbing it and giving it water directly. I also suggested them to put it over a shallow water dish and to keep its abdomen out of it. When my girlfriend gets off of work I will drive up there and see if there is anything I can do for it. Hopefully, they will let me bring it home and try and nurse it back to good health. My concern is that even if it gets better it will still have a hard time surviving at the pet store unless they move it into an enclosure where it gets enough ventilation to be kept at least slightly moist. More updates will come after I go by and check on it myself.
